- Associations and coaches need to stress concerns about abuse of officials. We will
lose the good young officials if this doesn’t improve
- Playoff scheduling - we may have to consider being rigid on extending dates as it seems to only increase problems. If teams can’t get games scheduled don’t chase down the league executive when it doesn’t go your way
- Congratulations to all the teams in our league with their deep runs in provincials
Thank you to the outgoing Commissioners.
New commissioners for the 2025-26
season, according to the rotation will be: U11 - Shaunavon, U13 - Lafleche, U15 -
Assiniboia, U18 - Eastend and need to be named by associations for the Fall Meeting.
6. Commissioner Reports - Motion (all reports): Mossbank, Second: Lafleche. Carried.
U11 - Rob Rutko (as read by K. Hay, Secretary)
Another season is in the books. The top 4 tourney was won by SC Ice Wolves and the 5 to 8 tourney was won by Eastend. A special thank you to the managers of all the teams, a thankless job, give yourself a pat on the back.
To all coaches, thanks for taking the time to work with the kids whether it be hockey
skills or development of character.
A huge thank you to the parents, your time and dedication Is very evident.
To the refs, thanks for stepping up and doing the best job possible, the games don’t happen without you.
Good luck to players, coaches and anyone involved in hockey for the upcoming season.
U13 - Gaetan Girardin (as read by K. Hay, Secretary)
The U13 league play went very smoothly. Only three players were suspended for 1
game each, 1 head coach suspended for 2 games and DC Jenson was suspended for 5 games from Hockey Sask and an additional 3 games from the league. For the second year in a row Lafleche played Gravelbourg-Kincaid in the final winning
the best of 3 series in 2 games.
U15 -Cole Labbee
There were scheduling issues at the end for playoffs, games need to be agreed upon.
There was an extension granted to accommodate the finals and the league had to make a ruling on when games would be played.
Was a good season overall, managers were great getting in the game sheets in on time, as well as providing scheduling updates as needed.
League finals came down to Cabri vs Wood River with Wood River taking the championship series in two games.
U18 - Neil Block
The U18 had a good season with seven strong teams. I was able to see all the teams play at least once and was impressed. There were a few scheduling changes that could’ve been avoided by looking at school sports schedules ahead of time. Weather also caused some problems, but that was to be expected. I cancelled one game at the end of the regular season because of player safety and the outcome was not going to change the league standings. I think the league should consider increasing the minimum
roster for U18. There were 34 games in suspensions, 25 games to 13 players and nine games to two coaches (seven games to one coach). All suspensions were in
accordance with the handbook.
Complaints about officiating were discussed with the President Dave and Ian Schafer and I also encouraged those teams to contact Hockey Sask with their concerns.
Mossbank, Maple Creek, Shaunavon, and Wood River competed in the respective
divisions in Provincials. Wood River won the provincial D championship,
Congratulations! As I said last year, it was great to see the calibre of hockey we have in Southwest Sask.
Shaunavon and Wood River played in the league final with Shaunavon winning the
championship. Congratulations!
All the best to the players who have completed their last season of Minor Hockey. Good luck in the future. Thank you to the coaches and officials who made the season possible, and special thanks to George for handling all of the scheduling changes that I sent him.
7. New Business
1) Virtual Scheduling Review
- online pilot was implemented for the 2023/2024 season.
- 2024/2025 scheduling for all divisions was done using an excel template created by Tracey Stenson similar to the online program but meetings were in person.
-2025/2026 scheduling format will be determined for each division at the fall meeting so the online program can be set up (number of teams/number of games) and scheduling will be done virtually
2) Letter of concern re: Fair Play from U11 Parent (Gull Lake)
- Concerns brought to the league regarding difference between skill level of U11 teams and Gull Lake had issues of kids being discouraged due to consistent losses, teams running up the score, asked about tiering teams in the U11 division to prevent blow-out games.
- Discussion re: tiering not possible due to scheduling requirements, not able to predict year to year which teams will be strong/weak. Option of teams not joining the league and play exhibition games and tournaments was not ideal as this may impact kids when moving up and development.
- Motion to remove entering of stats on the website for U11 division and only the final
score to be entered on website. Motion: Frontier, Seconded: Herbert. Motion carried.
